A System of Ethics by Friedrich Paulsen, translation into English by Frank Thilly (1906 Hardcover without Dust Jacket) It is a time capsule detailing a philosophy which people were taught to use in order "to live ethically with others" at the beginning of the 20th century…. This book was read by at least one historically influential leader in the 20th century who applied its teachings to help firm his interactions with the world. Read it not to improve yourself, but to understand how people thought at that time. a predecessor book which people before WWI were taught to build their own ideas on power and control. The original work was divided by the author into 4 books. This 1899 translation omitted the 4th book, which dealt with "Forms of Social Life" as well as other sections in the 4th edition the translator & publisher felt did not appeal to Americans as much as it did to the Germans. The copy for sale was likely to have been a student's copy for a college course on ethics. No notes within text, but table of contents was marked with sections to skip. xviii + 723pp. Hardcover has green cloth boards with gold lettering on spine. Book has edgewear through cloth, corners no longer square. Both gutters torn but repaired with glue and tape. Half inch of cloth gone from top & bottom edge of spine. Repairs have strengthened binding so interior is tight and book is quite usable. POS on ffep adds no value. Interior has unmarked text with clean pages. Basically, a complete college textbook around 120 years old that has seen weakening of materials with some rough handling, but is repaired to be usable without fear of additional harm to book. Near Good condition. 741pp. Copyright 1899. Implied printed in U.S.A., but not stated as such. 1906 date on title page implies this copy printed in 1906. Stated this is an English translation of the 4th edition of the German work. Print-run and English edition particulars not found. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. Thanks for looking.
