Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Special Edition. Special Edition for Peoples Book Club of Chicago. The tower of St. David's overlooked the town of Craskie. Strong, square, and built of gray stone, it stood at the end of the church on the grassy ridge that edged the lake. On one side lay the wide blue water, and on the other, the crisscrossing dark pattern of streets and trees and blocks of houses that made the town. This is a story of the towns people and their church, and how all get along. (illustratore).…

Animal Trust; a volunteer at Trindledown Farm
Rota (Julian). Packham (Chris) Foreword by Chris Packham. From the foreword: "Here is a plain, simple and good story about an essential connection between a man and his unruly charges. About how modest encounters with beautiful animals forge a deeper understanding of the value of life, all life, and formulate a desire to protect and preserve it . A gentle awakening, a broader vision and a greater love - all the ingredients for a better life. Quietly inspirational and charmingly honest, this tale is a real life changer from a life really changed."

S. A." [Handwritten in fountain pen bottom right corner:] "Dec 9926-34 Hutchinson" This is a law enforcement filing reference, case number, or identification code tied to a database or specific warrant registry. The "-34" typically signifies the filing or tracking year (1934), tracking the progress of the investigation shortly after the flyer's March 1933 mugshot print. Hutchinson is likely the surname of the detective, police officer, or filing clerk who processed, stored, or received this piece of evidence. This wanted poster/circular describes a fraudster using an alias/backstory targeting Jewish communities by pretending to be a "Prof. of Chemistry, driven recently from Germany" - reflecting the reality of individuals fleeing Nazi Germany in early 1933. Rosen was notorious nationwide for his "professor" scam. He was apprehended several times by various local police departments in different states during the 1930s for matching larceny and swindling charges. This circular was cut, spliced, and pasted together. The full, original 1933 print was a two-man wanted poster. The missing middle section featured a mugshot and personal description of a different con man. This explains why the text at the very bottom states, "Hold warrant for BOTH men" The very bottom of the original poster is preserved because it contained the vital contact information for Chief Francis Moran of Bellaire, Ohio. When one of the fugitives was apprehended, the section of the poster relating to him became obsolete. So to save visual space and avoid confusing officers on duty, a clerk or detective cut out the captured man's face and description. The clerk carefully trimmed away the irrelevant section and pasted the very bottom directly beneath Rosen's profile to keep a compact record of the active warrant. The "1 RA II / 1 RA 12" rubber stamp on bottom right is a Henry Fingerprint Classification formula. Before centralized computer databases like the modern FBI systems, police departments sorted criminal files physically by the patterns of their fingerprints. A formula like this allowed a clerk to narrow down a file search out of thousands of paper cards in seconds. The codes map out specific mathematical descriptors used in early-to-mid 20th-century American forensic archiving. 1 / 1 represents the Primary Classification value. Under the Henry Classification System, a "1/1" is a highly specific fraction indicating that the suspect has no whorl patterns on any of their ten fingers. It means his fingers consist entirely of arches or loops. RA: This stands for Radial Arch. It describes a relatively rare ridge pattern where the fingerprint arches peak and slope toward the radius bone (the thumb side of the hand). II / 12: These Roman and Arabic numerals indicate the Inner / Outer ridge counts or specific primary. . .…

Stated "first published 1935" on copyright page. Illustrated endpapers with maps of London on both. Occasional foxing, solid text block. In the publisher's dust jacket, retail price on front flap, light toning to spine, chipping along top edge, a very good example. Inscribed on the half title: "Dear Mr. Morrison, Thank you so much for letting me see this book. I think it is excellent and very clear. Yours ever. Montgomery of Alamein. 4-3-49." A unique association copy. Lord Morrison of Lambeth (1888-1965) was a British Labour Party politician. During his career, he served in numerous government positions, including Foreign Secretary (1951), Lord President of the Council (1945-1951), Leader of the House of Commons (1945-1951), Minister of Home Security (1940-1945), Minister of Supply (1940) and Minister of Transport (1929-1931). Morrison would likely have become Leader of the Labour Party, if not for fellow politician Clement Attlee, who remained Party Leader into the 1950s. When Attlee finally retired, Morrison was 67 and considered too old to take on the leadership of the party. Inscribed by Field Marshal Montgomery of Alamein to the author of this book, first edition of How Greater London Is Governed by the Right Honorable Herbert Morrison, Leader of the London County Council.
