Dieser Faksimileband wurde der Bilderhandschrift (Ms. Voss. Lat. Q. 79) originalgetreu nachgebildet, die sich in der Bibliothek der Rijksuniversiteit Leiden in den Niederlanden befindet. Die Aratea ist eine Lehrschrift der Astronomie, die sich am antiken Vorbild der Schrift Phainomena des Dichters Aratos von Soloi orientiert. Das Werk umfasst 200 Seiten mit 39 großen Illustrationen, die die Planeten, Himmelserscheinungen und Wetterzeichen erklären. Wie in den Phainomena dienten dem Verfasser der Aratea die Gestalten und Figuren der antiken griechischen Mythologie als Grundlage seiner Astronomie. Das Werk ist ein Meilenstein der Lehre von den Sternen und genoss über die Jahrhunderte hinweg größte Beliebtheit, was die mehrfachen Übersetzungen der Schrift belegen. Die 39 ganzseitigen, leuchtend rot umrahmten Miniaturen wurden von einem außergewöhnlich talentierten, leider namentlich nicht bekannten Buchmaler angefertigt. Der Künstler wählte ein tiefes Dunkelblau als Hintergrund seiner Illustrationen aus und benutzte für seine Darstellungen der Sternbilder feinstes Blattgold. Je nach Lichteinfall kann man die Sterne zum Leuchten bringen, so gelang dem Maler ein realitätsgetreues Abbild eines klaren Nachthimmels. Die Darstellungen der lebenden Figuren nach antiken Vorbildern sind kraftvoll und lebendig. Der Text der Aratea befindet sich auf separaten Seiten des Codex, um die prachtvollen Malereien nicht zu unterbrechen. Diese fast schon bahnbrechende Technik der Buchmalerei wurde hier erstmalig verwendet.
