This is a massive unabridged dictionary of the English language, widely regarded as one of the high points of American lexicography. It runs over 3,000 pages and boasts more than 600,000 entries including proper names, place names, and many more. It aimed to record the full vocab…ulary of English as used in the early twentieth century, with particular strength in literary, scientific, technical, and historical terms. It includes Detailed etymologies, pronunciation guidance, usage notes, synonyms, and extensive illustrative quotations. The information page / advertisement at the back of this copy states it is "The Most Notable Publishing Event of the Century".ABOUT THIS COPY: A very large, heavy book, it measures 12 inches tall x 9 inches wide x 5 inches thick, and weighs 15 lbs. Bound in a very pale apricot cloth, the cover bears gilt lettering encircled by a gilt border and blind stamped border along the edges. The spine is also lettered and accented in gilt. All edges marbled in light brown, light green, and light apricot. Thumb index / thumb-index cuts in black and gilt along the foredge. Light brown endpapers. Illustrated throughout with small black and white images depicting certain words, along with multiple full color and black and white plate inserts on semi-glossy paper throughout. Frontispiece is a full color portrait of Noah Webster. Triple columned in small print. 3194 pp.PROVENANCE: This book is from the library of Calvin Thielman, pastor for over thirty years to Billy Graham and his family. His ex-libre bookplate is present on the front endpaper. CONDITION: Moderate external wear and soiling. Marbling on the foredge is faded. The backstrip is separating from the binding and the spine is a bit shaken, but the boards are well affixed and the binding is sound. Leaves have ever-so-lightly toned with only occasional foxing. Unmarked except for previous owner's bookplate. An amazing, very large copy.
