Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. First Edition. Americana and American History, Law and Legal History, Most Recent Listing; Autograph; 63 pages; Publisher's blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt. Title page printed in red, gray and black. Nearly fine, in a clean dust jacket which shows a single, minor, closed tear at the top margin of the rear panel. Inscribed in ink by the editor and annotator on the front free-endpaper: "For Dr. Alfred F. Way, an old / and good friend. Had Abraham / Lincoln not been in Kalamazoo / 85 years ago today, this book / would not have been edited / by [signed] Tom Starr / 8/27/41." Lincoln made a speech supporting the Presidential candidacy of John C. Freemont in Kalamazoo on August 28, 1856. Freemont was the first nominee of the newly-born Republican party. Lincoln made the point that a vote for either of the opposing candidates [James Buchanan, or former President Millard Fillmore] was, in effect, a vote for slavery. Nicolay and Hay, in their standard edition of the Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln, made the following assertion: "In the canvass of 1856 Mr. Lincoln made over fifty speeches, noo one of which, so far as he remembers, was put into print. " According to Thomas Starr's prefaced, Lincoln's Kalamazoo address was transcribed by a newspaper reporter, making use of Gregg shorthand, and published in the Detroit 'Daily Advertiser' the day following Lincoln's speech. Thomas Starr asserts that this newspaper survived in a single copy only, housed in the Burton Historical Collection in the Detroit Public Library. For context, it may be useful to reflect that a day less than three months before Lincoln had addressed the crowd standing on the locally reknowned "Indian Mound" in Bronson Park -- he made his infamous "Lost Speech" on May 29, 1856, in Bloomington, Illinois. Traditional historicans thought of that famous speech by Lincoln as lost because it was such an impassioned condemnation of slavery -- so strong and engrossing that reporters neglected to take notes. The present Kalamazoo speech seems to have been neither noticed nor discussed by historians until around 1930 when Thomas Starr and two other researchers found it in the files of the 'Daily Advertiser. Starr agreed to postpone his publication of the speech in favor of a book then in preparation by his friend, Stephen Gilchrist ["Mr. Lincoln of Illinois"]. Mostly due to the great depression, the Gilchrist book did not appear. This is the Kalamazoo speech's first appearance in a book, following publication in a Sunday newspaper supplement in 1934, and a partial text published by Starr in the 'Michigan Bell' -- a publication for the employees of the Michigan Bell Telephone Company, in 1936. The other component of this 1941 book is presented as "the first published life of Abraham Lincoln, written by Joseph J. Lewis and published unsigned in the Chester County 'Times, ' at West Chester, Pennsylvania, February 11, 1860." It may be useful to recall that Lincoln was not so well known as the other politicians who sought the Presidential nomination of the new Republican party. It was thought that he required support in a large Eastern state -- New York and Ohio were rightly thought to have been pledged to others. Indeed, most credit support in Pennsylvania as having secured the nomination for Lincoln in 1860. Illustrations in this 1941 volume include both vintage and modern photographs of the Indian Mound in Kalamazoo and a double-page facsimile of the letter by Lincoln to "H[ezikiah] G. Wells" -- chairman of the executive committee in charge of the Kalamazoo meeting. Lincoln is thought to have spent the night in Wells' house, which was conveniently directly across the street from Bronson Park. Editor Starr writes that the Wells house was "hardly more than a stone's throw from the old Indian mound atop of which was erected the temporary stand from which Lincoln spoke. " The circumstances leading up.
