Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. 288, [2] pages. Illustrations (all present). Index. Ink notation on fep. DJ has wear, tears, soiling, and chips. The verso does NOT state "First printing". Ludwig Philipp Albert Schweitzer OM (14 January 1875 - 4 September 1965) was an Alsatian polymath. He was a theologian, organist, musicologist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician. A Lutheran minister, Schweitzer challenged both the secular view of Jesus as depicted by the historical-critical method current at this time, as well as the traditional Christian view. His contributions to the interpretation of Pauline Christianity concern the role of Paul's mysticism of "being in Christ" as primary and the doctrine of justification by faith as secondary. He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life", becoming the eighth Frenchman to be awarded that prize. His philosophy was expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Lambaréné, French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon). As a music scholar and organist, he studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and influenced the Organ Reform Movement (Orgelbewegung). The keynote of Schweitzer's personal philosophy (which he considered to be his greatest contribution to mankind) was the idea of Reverence for Life ("Ehrfurcht vor dem Leben"). He thought that Western civilization was decaying because it had abandoned affirmation of life as its ethical foundation. "Out of My Life and Thought" shatters the old myth and allows us to glimpse the real Albert Schweitzer, a man whose moral example is as relevant and compelling in the 1990s as it was in the 1930s on first publication. Eloquent and heartfelt."-- "Los Angeles Times". Of the many highly esteemed books Albert Schweitzer penned in his life, he valued his autobiography the most. He had become a legend and he wanted to remind readers that he was just a man, and a man who had learned from many others. He had been fortunate to be in the right places at the right times, to meet people of thought and sympathy. He wanted to report his debts to them. He wanted to clarify his reasons and methods for his undertakings and to respond to some of his critics. And, he wished to honor something greater than he was--reverence for life. Reverence for Life became his life's motto, and it brought him pain as well as joy as he sought to respect how precious and unique each life is. Schweitzer believed there was a way to live in the world, accept it, take joy from it--and who could know this better than a man who had placed himself so much in it, given so much for it, and had been ready to receive experience as a gift to be thankful for. "An authentic twentieth-century classic. Few books in our time have had a greater impact on the life and values of untold numbers of people."--Norman Cousins. Presumed First U.S. Edition, later printing.…

Bound in full brown leather with two light brown labels to spine bearing gilt titling. Spine has gilt fillets, moderate wear to leather throughout, a chip to head, and light splitting to top of rear joint. Boards have significant wear to edges exposing the boards in some areas, heavy bumping to lower fore corners, an area of heavy peeling to the leather around the fore edge of the rear board, and rubbing throughout. Text block has decorative speckling and moderate age-toning to edges, age-toning and foxing to endpapers, creases to corners of a few leaves, slight mis-trimming to bottom edges of the first two leaves of "The Surgeon's Practical Guide in Dressing", a spot of material transference from one leaf to another on the edge of the last page (likely due to an area of adhesive being pulled apart), light foxing throughout, and light penciling throughout. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow. Part of the "Select Medical Library" series by a publisher in Philadelphia, this book is an example of a trend in the 1830s and -40s where American publishers frequently printed European medical texts in monthly installments and then offered them bound together into annual volumes for doctors and medical students. Before international copyright laws and fast transatlantic shipping were established, these American reprints helped local physicians stay up-to-date at an affordable cost. 1415471. Please refer to photos. **First published in Spanish in 1605 and 1612, Don Quixote became a foundational novel of the western canon, and in foreign translation from the early days of publication. Irish Translator CHARLES JERVAS's [misspelled Jarvis] (1675-1739) version is a classic. The Irish translator was also an artist and poet. The work of British Artists SAMUEL SHELLEY (c.1750-1808) and THOMAS STOTHARD (1755-1834) also make this a notable illustrated version of the celebrated Spanish novel. Shelley was a miniaturist, watercolor artist and a co-founder of the Watercolor Society. Biographer F.M. O'Donoghue called him "one of the most charming and fashionable miniaturists of his time, ranking with Cosway, Smart, and Collins." (DNB) Stothard apprenticed as a draughtsman in fabric design, and later became engaged in book illustration and portraiture. He and Samuel Shelley lodged together in The Strand from 1778. Stothard's work was shown at The Royal Academy around this time, and he also enjoyed the mentorship of portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds and landscape artist Richard Wilson. Many of his illustrations were published in the popular press, although it was a print artist and book illustrator for which he became famous. Some of his works were engraved by the young William Blake. (Monkhouse, DNB). Worldcat 975142591; cf. Biblioteca Central, Barcelona. Catalogo de la colleccíon cervantina. (AMJ).
