T^l secreto de la flor de oro data de mediados del ZZz siglo xvm y aparece por primera vez en Occidente en 1929, debiendo parte de su fama a los comentarios que le dedicó C. G. Jung por la influencia que tuvo este libro sobre sus teorías psicológicas. Esta obra, compilada de textos mucho más antiguos, aúna conceptos filosóficos taoístas y budistas, y su contenido se centra en un método denominado «hacer girar la luz», perteneciente al budismo chan y cuyo objetivo es la consecución del despertar de la mente y el encuentro con el «yo» real. No obstante, esta práctica está expuesta de modo simbólico con un lenguaje alquímico taoísta y a través de numerosas alegorías. Ya el título del libro evidencia su naturaleza metafórica, pues «flor» aluede al florecimiento o apertura de la mente, y «oro» es el símbolo de la luz, por lo que podemos llamarlo «El secreto de la apertura de la mente a la ilumniación». Esta versión a cargo de Thomas Cleary enriquece la publicada por Wilhelm en 1929, ya que se ajusta con más rigor a la redacción original china, y transmite con más fidelidad el sentido y los conceptos que atesora.
