El propósito del presente estudio fue describir las pautas de morbilidad y mortalidad de los niños menores de 5 años que fueron admitidos en 11 hospitales de distrito de la Provincia del Cabo Oriental de 2000 a 2004. Las causas pretransicionales fueron responsables de más de un tercio de la morbilidad y la mortalidad, que pueden estar asociadas con el bajo nivel socioeconómico y de desarrollo de la provincia.
