Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. Jacket design by F.G. Kutner (illustratore). 1st Edition. The condition of this book -- and particularly its dust jacket -- is a bit sad. We list it because it's the actual hard-to-find first edition/first printing of the winner of the 1951 Edgar Award for "Best First Mystery," a book which in better condition can now approach $1,000. But IF YOU WANT AN ATTRACTIVE READING COPY, PLEASE CONSIDER BUYING ONE OF THE FAR MORE COMMON BOOK-CLUB EDITIONS, available at a much more modest price. (Note: Copies misleadingly dated 1949 with no clear statement of edition are almost always book-club editions. This copy, on the other hand, is dated "1950" to title page and states to copyright page "First Edition / Published April 1950.") Rear flap also states "This novel has been serialized in the Saturday Evening Post," explaining the 1949 copyright to The Curtis Publishing Co. Taut kidnap thriller involving a railroad detective (most of the action centers on the "Manhattan Depot," a thinly disguised Grand Central Station) was basis for the 1950 Rudolph Mate film "Union Station" (William Holden, Nancy Olson, Barry Fitzgerald.) Book in hand is rubber-stamped in green "857 American Lending Library, Inc." to FFE, and "Library Copy" to bottom page edges. Then the TOP page edges have been stamped "ZGC." Original F.G. Kutner dust jacket here is not price clipped; still shows original $2.50 price. NO library attachments; no removed attachments. However, the gomers in question trimmed the bottom half-inch (13 mm) off this jacket (for no apparent reason), and then GLUED THE JACKET FLAPS TO THE PASTEDOWNS. True, it's ONLY the flaps which are glued down; they could presumably be worked free with some solvent and a lot of patience, but we offer this artifact "as found." Text block itself is complete, would otherwise grade "very good." Mystery; kidnapping caper; Books-into-film. 218 pp. Here reduced from $115.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. In line with the British Psychological Society's recent recommendations for teaching the history of psychology, this comprehensive undergraduate textbook emphasizes the philosophical, cultural and social elements that influenced psychology's development. The authors demonstrate that psychology is both a human (i.e. psychoanalytic or phenomenological) and natural (i.e. cognitive) science, exploring broad social-historical and philosophical themes such as the role of diverse cultures and women in psychology, and the complex relationship between objectivity and subjectivity in the development of psychological knowledge. The result is a fresh and balanced perspective on what has traditionally been viewed as the collected achievements of a few 'great men'. With a variety of learning features, including case studies, study questions, thought experiments and a glossary, this new textbook encourages students to critically engage with chapter material and analyze themes and topics within a social, historical and philosophical framework.
