1 lettre autographe signée 3 pp. 1/2 In-8 16/07/1894 Petites déchirures au pli, traces anciennes d'adhésif Dans cette intéressante lettre, le sculpteur Gabriel-Jules Thomas explique à son ami Charles Marionneau, peintre et historien de l'art, qu'il n'a pas parvenu à attribuer un portrait du Maréchal d'Ornano : « Je connais grand… nombre de statues ainsi agenouillées sur des tombeaux qui offrent autant d'analogie avec celle [du cardinal René] de Birague que celle du Maréchal d'Ornano ; dans le grand manteau tombant des épaules, comme dans la manière dont il est jeté. Il me semble bien difficile dans ce cas de pouvoir déterminer si il vient de la même école. » Thomas indique également à son correspondant qu'il lui fera envoyer le discours du Monument de Barye dès qu'il sera publié. Il donne aussi des nouvelles de Gabriel Rispal, sculpteur, qui se prépare au Concours ainsi que de William Bouguereau, célère peintre académique : « Notre ami Bouguereau va toujours très bien il vient de passer une huitaine de jours à Anvers où il a fait partie du jury des récompenses. » Sculpteur, prix de Rome, professeur à l'École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, il reçoit de nombreuses commandes de statues, notamment pour la façade de la Gare du Nord à Paris ou pour la Comédie française.
