Hoffmann, Thomas Mann, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean Paul, Arthur Schnitzler oder Paul Valéry werden die Kontexte herausgearbeitet, in denen die Autoren in ihren Dichtungen das Tanzen als zentrales Ereignis im Fest- und Alltagsleben reflektieren. Tanzszenarien werden zum Schlüssel soziokultureller Prozesse und persönlicher Konfliktsituationen zugleich. Zudem wird der jeweilige Erfahrungshorizont der Autoren befragt, die oft mit kritischer Distanz in den bis zum 20. Jahrhundert verbindlichen Normenkanon der Tanz- und Ballveranstaltungen hineinwuchsen.
