A novel with Russian Mafia involvement. "Crow, "the pseudonym of a prizewinning, critically acclaimed literary novelist," comes forth with this raw-edged, Ramboesque crime drama about a Baltimore police detective's secret past and his frenzied pursuit of an old foe. None of his colleagues on the force know that narcotics cop Luther Ewing got kicked out of the U.S. Special Forces for inappropriate violence during the Gulf War. Nor do they know that Ewing then turned mercenary sniper, killing at least 84 Serb soldiers in Bosnia before getting shot in the head himself. Baltimore police are also unaware that the man who has seized the city's street drug trade, a ruthless Russian mobster named Vassily, is one of Ewing's former buddies in the soldier-for-hire ranks. Forsaking his old friendship, Ewing leads a sting operation to nab Vassily; not only does it fail, but the drug kingpin vows to come after him. Blood spills up and down the eastern seaboard, from Baltimore to Brighton Beach, as the two battle-hardened warriors track each other. The action moves in steady, violent bursts, interwoven with moments of tense reflection and preparation as the hunt progresses. It's a strong beginning to what is apparently envisioned as a series. Through vivid first-person narration, Ewing emerges as a well-constructed caricature a complex brooder, scarred by his past, emotionally distant but exactly the kind of man for those nasty jobs no one else is willing to do." -- Publishers Weekly. Casing is a little worn, toned and scratched; lies flat and square, a good to very good copy. Pressman and introducer Dille has reduced the original story to expert doggerel; "I think," he says, "my preference for this particular legend is because of the denouement, which involves not only the pharmacological effects of cyanide but also the delicate accomplishment of homicide the the method of Burke and Hare".

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [good sound copy, internally clean, mildly shelfworn, light dust-soiling to top of text block, very light bumping to bottom corners]. Pseudonymous novel by Stephen Longstreet, set in the 1920s in a fictional Midwestern town, "Corinth." The plot centers around a romantic triangle that culminates in a scandalous double murder, and is set against the background of labor troubles. The author, in a note to the reader, explains that his purely-invented "Crime of the Century"-type situation "owes nothing to the real events [of the 1920s] except the pure frenzy, the emotion with which we took such things in those days." Longstreet, who began his professional life as an artist, began writing for radio in 1933 and went on to a multi-faceted career as a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, art critic, lecturer, journalist, and jazz historian. He wrote dozens of books (one source says "over 100," but honestly, I haven't counted), both fiction and nonfiction, and employed as many as a half-dozen pseudonyms. His best-known screenwriting credit was probably for THE JOLSON STORY (1946), and he also co-wrote the book for the 1947 Broadway musical "High Button Shoes," adapted from his own semi-autobiographical novel, "The Sisters Liked Them Handsome." ("Thomas Burton" appearse to have been Longstreet's "serious fiction set in the 1920s Midwest" pseudonym, as the only other book for which he used it was the 1941 novel "Bloodbird," which dealt with the conflict between farmers and industrialists over the building of a hydroelectric dam.).
