This book documents an ambitious three-part archaeological study commissioned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and conducted by the Archaeology Branch of the stateâs Division of Archives and History. The study was an early and important project in the development of a standardized statewide archaeological survey program, designed to fulfill the departmentâs obligations under several pieces of federal historic preservation legislation, including the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The three projects reported here were undertaken as one step towards realizing the programâs objectives and were specifically mandated to aid in the identification, evaluation, and National Register nomination of eligible historic properties under the stateâs jurisdiction. They comprise a series of baseline surveys conducted in advance of road construction projects and resulted in significant new information on the prehistory and history of each respective study region, including the first professional archaeological investigations of three DOT highway construction projects in Hertford, Wilkes, and Ashe counties. The data collected by the author and his team have contributed to the development of predictive models of prehistoric and historic site locations in North Carolina and have provided valuable insights into the nature and goals of statewide survey programs in the field of archaeology, assessing their capacity for undertaking intensive archaeological surveys effectively and expeditiously. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
