TRIGGE, General Sir Thomas [c1742-1814] [British Military Officer, Commander-in-Chief in the West Indies (1799-1801), Lieutenant-Governor of Gibraltar (1804)]. Manuscript Letter, Signed, dated Gibraltar, December 18, 1804 and addressed to Captain Robinson, HMS Swiftsure. Trigg requests that Robinson give the order to Captain Boyle of HMS Seahorse to convey Trigge back to England where he is to take up his new appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Chelsea Hospital. He had been prevented from returning sooner on board HMS Triumph: "the Fever which broke out in the Garrison, and consequent death of Major General Barnett, rendered it necessary that I should remain till the arrival of a General Officer to take 'the command'. Lieutenant General Fox having arrived with convoy, I am anxious to return to England as soon as possible.". Trigge fought during the Seven Years' War and commanded the 12th Regiment of Foot during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. He appeared in the commemorative painting of the siege executed by George Carter for the City of London. As Commander-in-Chief in the West Indies he was responsible for the capture of Surinam (1799), St. Martin, St. Bartholomew, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, for which actions he was made a Knight of the Bath. He was briefly active Lieutenant-Governor of Gibraltar following the departure of the unpopular Governor, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn who had been ordered to restore discipline among the drunken troops but whose efforts provoked a mutiny; one of Trigge's first acts was to countermand 35 of the 169 new regulations the Prince had introduced.
