Carter Brown, Director, National Gallery of Art, Washington, the color plates produced originally by Fontana & Bonomi in Italy. Frontispieces for the 3 parts, created as screen prints by Josef Albers (1973), are here reproduced w/ the permission of Anni Albers & the Josef Albers Foundation. Leaves from the 3 earlier Bibles are from The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. The type face is Sabon Antiqua by Jan Tschichold, Switzerland, 1967, a modern rendering of the design by Claude Garamond, France, c. 1532. It is phototype, produced originally for this Bible. The text paper is Camelia Matte. The end leaf design is printed on Stoneridge paper. The volume is bound in pyroxylinized cloth embossed w/ the Washburn College Bible symbol. Printing of the text, and the binding, are by Kingsport Press, Tennessee. AN EXCEPTIONAL NOTE ABOUT THIS SUPERB BIBLE: This work brings together beauty & holiness. Beauty has suffered in recent centuries through the legitimate effort to disseminate the Bible by bringing the price within the range of the common purse. Hasty editions have been issued on paper which after a span of years crumbles at the touch, & the only merit of the type has been conventional legibility. The medieval manuscript Bibles were artistic masterpieces. So also was the Gutenberg Bible, since the type imitated the written script even to the point of retaining the now needless abbreviations, & the paper was of a quality which after 500 years suffers only from worm holes. The material of this present edition lacks the ingredients tasty for worms. The setting of the type is directed not to the achievement of rigid regularity in length of line & column, but rather to the rounding out of sentences & phrases, so that the eye readily perceives & the voice readily conveys the meaning. The total layout of the page is immensely pleasing. The format can be recommended for pulpit use, because it is legible at normal reading distance. The original edition was too costly for the widow's mte. The present Oxford edition makes possible use for private devotions. -Roland H. Bainton, Titus Street Professor Emeritus of Ecclesiastical History, Yale Divinity School, Yale University * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps & custom-packages this Beautiful BIBLE for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee & internationally via Mandatory USPS INTERNATIONAL PRIORITY MAIL (w/ rates on request).
