James Thomson (1827-1888) was a poet and songwriter, and a journeyman wood-turner. He was also a freemason and founder of the Hawick Burns Club, in 1878. The poems in this volume, first publ…ished in 1870, had mostly appeared in the columns of various newspapers and periodicals. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered bevelled boards with worn gold titling on the front board. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and soiling with some damp or water staining on the boards. The spine ends and corners are bumped with wear to the cloth and a little bubbling to the cloth on the front board. The titling on the front board is noticeably worn. The contents are tight and clean with some browning to the title page and some scattered light foxing. A few pages have marks from finger smudges, etc. The front endpapers are split down the spine gutter and there is partial splitting to the rear endpapers. A name has been written on the bottom corner of the rear fixed endpaper.
