Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. First edition of this important collection of English women poets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from the notorious Restoration dramatist Aphra Behn, the first Englishwoman to earn a living by her writing, to the eighteenth-century world traveler Lady Mary Wortley Montague: "Believe me, 'tis by far the wiser course, / Superior art should meet superior force: / Hear, but be faithful to your int'rest still: / Secure your hearts -- then fool with whom you will." Other poets featured, many with biographical sketches, include Mary Barber, Elizabeth Carter, Lady Mary Chudleigh, Catharine Cockburn, Constantia Grierson, Mary Jones, Anne Killigrew, Mary Leapor, Judith Madan, Mary Masters, Mary Monck, Margaret Cavendish (Duchess of Newcastle), Katherine Philips, Laetitia Pilkington, Elizabeth Rowe and Anne Finch (Lady Winchelsea). This copy belonged to Benjamin Adney (1784-1806), who joined the North Devon Regiment as an ensign at the start of the Napoleonic Wars in 1803. ESTC T42592; NCBEL II, 687 (under "Thornton"). A very good example of an uncommon early anthology, in a contemporary binding. Two twelvemo volumes, measuring 6.5 x 4 inches: xii, 312; viii, 316. Full contemporary calf, boards and raised bands double-ruled in gilt, red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, volume numbers in gilt to spines. Typographic decorations and engraved headpiece in text. Ownership signatures of Benjamin Adney and Eliza Fawkner on front pastedown of Volume I, with presentation inscription: "15 Sept 1803 / Eliza Fawckner [sic] / her Book / given her by Mr. Adney / North Devon [R]egt." On lower pastedown on Volume I: "B. Adney Ensign / N.D. Regiment / Dec 25 1803" with ink annotations. Pen trials to title page of Volume I and front pastedown of Volume II. Moderate wear to bindings, with shallow loss to headcaps and corners; flyleaves excised; early marginal paper repair to preface.…
