The aim of this book is to show how to win games with Black. The method is calculated aggression, right from move one. In this book the reader will find a brief account of how this aggression applied to counter-gambits. 67 games are fully annotated and a further 25 complete games are to found in the theoretical notes. The Ponziani Opening is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3. It is one of the oldest chess openings, having been discussed in the literature by 1497. It was advocated by Howard Staunton, generally considered the world's strongest player from 1843 to 1851, in his 1847 book The Chess-Player's Handbook. For some decades, it was often called "Staunton's Opening" or the "English Knight's Game" as a result. Today, it is usually known by the name of Domenico Lorenzo Ponziani, whose main contribution to the opening was his introduction, in 1769, of the countergambit 3.f5!? This variation of the Sicilian has been gaining more and more popularity and is very often seen in tournament practice. The fact that this opening has become part of a standard repertoire against 1.e4 for many top players such as Rapport, Dubov, Li Chao, Korobov, Gupta, Vovk etc. speaks for itself about the quality and the fascination of the variation and also about the many possibilities it offers. It's hard to pinpoint the real reasons for this popularity, but it's likely that the answer lies in the complexity of the positions that arise on the board and the large number of new ideas. First edition. This rarely seen move has some logical basis. The pawn on e5 prevents Black playing Nf6 and so the Black Kingside is cramped for a while. White can support the e5 pawn with Nf3. The drawback for White of 2.e5 is no added pressure is brought to the center, especially on d4 or d5 and the extra tempo allows Black various options, the main one is play Nc6 which hinders White's d4 move as well as attacking the as yet undefended e5 pawn. Drawing on new research, this biography of William Steinitz (1836-1900), the first World Chess Champion, covers his early life and career, with a fully-sourced collection of his known games until he left London in 1882. A portrait of mid-Victorian British chess is provided, including a history of the famous Simpson's Divan. Born to a poor Jewish family in Prague, Steinitz studied in Vienna, where his career really began, before moving to London in 1862, bent on conquering the chess world. During the next 20 years, he became its strongest and most innovative player, as well as an influential writer on the game. A foreigner with a quarrelsome nature, he suffered mockery and discrimination from British amateur players and journalists, which eventually drove him to immigrate to America. A professional player who derived his livelihood from annual tours of chess clubs in England and other countries, entertaining and teaching amateur players, he astonished his contemporaries by the ease with which he played the game without sight of the chessboard. At 21, he set a world record for such exhibitions, competing against 12 club players simultaneously, and he continued to perform "blindfold" into his sixties.
