Ting Ling (Ding Ling) (1904-1986) was the pen name of Jiang Bingzhi, also known as Bin Zhi. The feminism and social realism expressed in her fiction endeared her to the CCP leadership during their rough-hewed Yan'an days; indeed, later she was celebrated in Moscow: In 1954 Ding Ling won the second prize of the Soviet State Prize for Literature. Despite punitive action by both the KMT and the CCP during her lifetime, she remains one of the most prominent female Chinese authors of the last century. This scarce early collection of English translations also includes the stories "New Faith," "Ping-Ping," "The Journalist and the Soldier," and "Night." Quite uncommon.Dust jacket is now housed in a removable clear archival sleeve. …

Now known as Ding Ling, Ting Ling (1904-1986) was the pen name of Jiang Bingzhi, a prominent early Communist activist writer. She was imprisoned, and her husband executed by the Kuomintang for her Communist activities and writing. Later she was censured by Mao for her Feminist writings, and imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution. She authored over 300 works, won a Soviet literary prize, and was a guest at the University of Iowa's writing program. This biography and assessment of her contribution lists the major events of her life as ending in 1956, with her purge. Light rubbing to extremities of green wrappers, else fine./ One of the authors purged by the Chinese Communist Party was Ting Ling. Her early writings gave expression to the feelings of intellectuals, and of women in particular. Her writings attracted large numbers of young people. Her keen individualism and her freedom-seeking spirit were incompatible with the basic nature of Communism. In 1933 she was arrested for taking part in political activities. She later fled to Yenan. Although she initially thrived under the Chinese Communist regime in 1957 the Party Committee of the Writer's union accused her of being a 'rightist' and sent into obscurity.…
