Zhu Da (Badashanren - 1625-1705), peintre et poète, issu d une famille de nobles lettrés. Quand les Mandchous prennent le pouvoir et qu est fondée la dynastie Qing, insoumis devant la terreur imposée aux lettrés, il se tourne vers la vie monacale et devient taoïste. Simulant la folie, il inscrira un beau matin le mot « muet » sur sa porte et ne communiquera plus que par cris inarticulés, par gestes ou par l'écriture. Humour, fantaisie et rigueur caractérisent ce peintre célèbre et excentrique à qui il était possible de réduire ses peintures à une douzaine de coups de pinceau, « faisant de son petit monde de cigales, de tiges d'orchidées, de melons et de cailloux un vaste univers que l'on ne finit jamais d'explorer » (Pierre Ryckmans). Jiang Ting Xi (1669-1732), Grand Secrétaire à la Cour impériale et célèbre calligraphe est un peintre de fleurs et d'oiseaux de la dynastie des Qing.
