Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 8.0, Maastricht University, course: Financial Markets, language: English, abstract: This paper examines b…anking competition in Florida by measuring and comparing the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), critical mass, and several other competition measures. First, the model and resulting competition measure calculations are explained. Second, the model is applied to banks in Florida and the results are given. Third, the results are discussed and the paper is concluded. Previous research showed that using the HHI in market power models can lead to erroneous results, a new measure was introduced: the critical mass. The results for the HHI and the C3 ratio's lead to the conclusion that there is a low concentration in the market, while the results for the critical mass show that all banks in the market have power and that the market is highly concentrated. These conflicting results cannot be completely explained by changes of key variables over time. An extension of the data set with more recent data is needed to determine which concentration measure is right.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, grade: 8.5, , course: Empirical Econometrics II, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates the effects of monetary policy in the US by c…omparing a system of equations - estimated from a VECM (vector error correction model) - to a SVAR (structural autoregressive) model. Vector error-correction models are used when there exists long-run equilibrium relation-ships between non-stationary data integrated of the same order. Those models imply that the stationary transformations of the variables adapt to disequilibria between the non-stationary variables in the model. In contrast, SVAR models focus on the contemporaneous interdependence between the variables. The authors apply these two methods on a model with a contractionary monetary policy which affects the short-term interest rate. Following Sims and Zha the authors use a shock to the Treasury Bill rate instead of a shock to the Federal Funds rate. The paper continues as follows. First, a description of the data is given. Secondly, it presents a system of equations built from the LSE approach, aiming at macroeconomic simulations. Thirdly, it compares results obtained from the previous part to those obtained using SVAR impulse response functions (IRFs) identified with sign restrictions. The paper focuses on the impact of the simulated policies or monetary shocks on GDP and its growth rate.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 9.0/10, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: Previous research has already proven that firms which get included in o…r excluded from the S&P 500 index experience stock price changes that ultimately result in market capitalization changes. The causes of these changes has extensively been examined, but a consensus on the true cause has not yet been reached. In this paper the market capitalization effect is examined by making a distinction between the reasons for inclusions and exclusions. It is argued that expected events, like bankruptcy and index-downgrading, have lower price effects than unexpected events, which include mergers and acquisitions. By usage of a regression analysis it is concluded that there is no difference in price effects between the individual reasons for inclusions and exclusions. However, when the reasons are grouped into unexpected and expected events there is a significant effect for the inclusions. Firms which expectedly enter the index experience lower market capitalizations changes than firms which unexpectedly entered the index. This effect could not be proved for exclusions.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 8.5, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: There is a growing attention for the corporate social responsibility and socially responsible investing… (SRI) of organisations, and shareholders are increasingly voicing their concerns. This research examined whether the different characteristics of these shareholders have an impact on the support for shareholder proposals that are related to SRI. The effects of European ownership and political views on SRI proposal success of US firms were researched. It was hypothesised that Europeans have a positive effect on proposal success since there is more progression with respect to CSR in Europe, compared to the US. No evidence could be found in support of this hypothesis; the results show that European ownership has no significant effect on proposal success. It was also hypothesised that Democratic shareholders increase the chances of proposal success when compared to Republicans. The results show that a 1% increase in the share of Democratic shareholders increases the amount of positive votes on SRI proposals with 0.25%. The same increase in the share of Republican shareholders increases these positive votes by 0.23%. The hypothesis can thus be accepted, although the impact is very small. Several limitations were discussed which could be addressed in future research; with an improved regression model the research question could be researched in a more secure manner.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 8.5, Maastricht University, course: Macroeconomics I, language: English, abstract: Our goal in this paper is to replicate the model of Gertler and Karadi…(2011) and to give an elaborate overview of the way in which this model works. Instead of showing the final results, we provide a step-by-step overview of all the necessary calculations and derivations that lead to the ultimate model. Our last objective is to explain the relevance and the impact that the paper of Gertler and Karadi had. First, we describe the model with separate sections for the different agents that play a role in the model: households, financial intermediaries, intermediate goods firms, capital producing firms, retail firms, and the government (including the central bank). Secondly, we perform a Taylor approximation and import out model into Matlab. Thirdly, the model is analysed and the results are given. Fourthly, the impact of the Gertler and Karadi paper is discussed.
