Established in the 1760s, the library's origins lie in the personal collection of Antoine Moriau, a magistrate and bibliophile who bequeathed his vast collection to the city. The author explores the motivations and challenges faced by the library's founders, providing insights into the intellectual and cultural climate of 18th-century Paris. The book also examines the library's growth and development over the years, its significance as a resource for scholars and researchers, and its role in preserving and disseminating knowledge. Ultimately, this book sheds light on the importance of public libraries as repositories of collective memory and centers of intellectual inquiry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book examines the lesser-known aspects of Paris during the late medieval period, moving beyond famous landmarks such as Notre Dame Cathedral toward lesser-known but still historically significant subjects like colleges, convents, and schools that shaped the region. The author notes that much of what was constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries still stood and was in active use during the time period of the book's focus, providing a fascinating look at what life was like. This book offers a look at a period of transition in which building and population expansion occurred alongside transformative political and social upheavals, offering valuable insights into a variety of topics relevant to medieval scholars, historians, and casual readers interested in the period. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is the fifth installment in a series, providing an in-depth study of the topography of old Paris by region. The focus of this volume is the western region of the University, an area rich in history and culture. The author draws on both historical and graphic sources to reconstruct the medieval parceling of this area. The region was once home to a Gallo-Roman palace, but by the Middle Ages, it had become a patchwork of vineyards, churches, and monasteries. The construction of the city wall by King Philip Augustus in the late 12th century transformed the area, bringing it within the city limits and spurring new development. The author describes in detail the streets, churches, colleges, palaces, and other landmarks that characterize this region, providing a fascinating glimpse into the urban landscape of medieval Paris. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
