Hardcover. Condizione: VG+/VG+. Brown cloth boards, gilt lettering on spine, color illustrated dust jacket, 310 pp, profusely illustrated with 260 color plates. "For more than twenty years the work of iconoclastic sculptor Steve Tobin has affected the public, curators, and critics on a profound level in its transformation of the wonders of nature into monumental sculptures in bronze, steel, glass, and ceramics. In seeking to formalize nature, Tobin, who was trained as a mathematician, has turned his technical understanding of process and materials into an exploration of form and energy, order and chaos, as inspired by the creative events in nature. His work captures in unique, memorable, and often allegorical form the wonders of nature we see, and meaning and implications we may have overlooked. In this important volume, Tobin's principal bodies of work are explored, from his early blown glass Cocoons and cast-glass Doors, through his luminous Waterglass, to the more recent Shelters and Earth Bronzes (including his highly acclaimed African Termite Hills, Bone sculptures, and signature Roots) and his provocative new Exploded Clay. Copiously illustrated, and complemented by a probing investigation of the artist by critic Donald Kuspit, Steve Tobin's Natural History offers the first comprehensive treatment of Tobin's work, and helps to place his contribution to art and sculpture in the larger context of the discourse of art in our time."--Jacket. Includes bibliographical references (pages 300-301) and index.

Color and black & white illustrations. Faint foxing to foredge, else a fine copy in black leatherette; 'Robert Indiana' stamped in silver at lower corner of cover. Exhibition catalog for the second one-man retrospective of Indiana's works, which traveled to five museums between September 1977 at the University Art Museum in Austin concluding at The Art Center in South Bend IN in July 1978. Features full-page color illustrations of Indiana's Highball on the Redball Manifest (1963); Art (1972): The Demuth American Dream No. 5 (1963): The Dietary (1962); Year of Meteors (1961); The Metamorphosis of Norma Jean Mortenson (1967); and Decade: Autoportrait (1965, 1972-75) and numerous b/w illustrations. Includes a chronology and checklist of Indiana's work. Robert L. B. Tobin was a notable San Antonio philanthropist (the Tobin Wing at the McNay Art Museum was opened in his honor in 1988). Tobin underwrote 'Don Carlos' for the opening celebration of HemisFair, the official World's Fair, in 1968 where he served as Cultural Vice-President. Robert Indiana was commissioned to create the official poster for HemisFair, during which the largest collection of Indiana's work to date was installed at the McNay Art Museum. With Tobin's involvement with HemisFair, and his close ties to the McNay, it is perhaps during this time that Tobin's friendship with Robert Indiana began to flourish. In the coming years, Tobin became one of Robert Indiana's largest collectors and a number of his paintings and graphics are included in this exhibition.
