Der Jesuitenpater Toderini (1728-1799) hielt sich von Oktober 1781 bis Mai 1786 am Hofe des venezianischen Gesandten Garzoni in Konstantinopel auf. Er beschäftigte sich ausgiebig mit der moslemischen Kultur, trug zahlreiche türkische Bücher und Manuskripte zus…ammen und nutzte seine guten Beziehungen zur Vertiefung seiner Studien. Sein Werk sorgte für große Aufmerksamkeit, war doch seit der Arbeit von Donado "Letteratura de' Turchi" (1688) keine Quellenschrift von dieser Ausführlichkeit veröffentlicht worden. Der erste Teil beschäftigt sich mit dem Geistesleben der Türken, am Schluss ein Abschnitt über ihre Musik; der zweite Teil behandelt überwiegend das Bibliothekswesen; der dritte über die Buchdruckerei enthält den ersten, mit genauen Beschreibungen versehenen Katalog der ersten türkischen Druckerei in Konstantinopel, die 1727 eingerichtet wurde. ?
