Für die Klöster des Zisterzienserordens waren das Schreiben und Archivieren entscheidende Medien der Selbstbehauptung und Selbstdarstellung. Doch dienten Buchbesitz und Schriftgebrauch nicht nur der Repräsentation und Liturgie. Vielmehr prägten auch rein pragmatische Gesichtspunkte das Verhältnis der Zisterzienser zur Schriftlichkeit. Dies gilt gleichermaßen für das im Meißner Gebiet gelegene Zisterzienserkloster Altzelle. Im Jahr 1506 ließ Abt Martin von Lochau im Konversenhaus, dem einstigen Dormitorium der Laienbrüder, einen Bibliothekssaal einrichten. Hier fand die berühmte Büchersammlung des Klosters ihren Platz, die nach der 1540 erfolgten Säkularisierung von Altzelle zum Teil in den Besitz der Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig gelangte. 500 Jahre später war die Umfunktionierung des Konversenhauses ein willkommener Anlass, um die Schriftzeugnisse, Wirkungsgeschichte und Baugestalt dieser Altzeller Klosterbibliothek 2006 auf einer Tagung herauszustellen und in den Kontext internationaler Forschung zu rücken. Diesen Themenkreisen widmen sich die Beiträge des nun vorliegenden Sammelbandes.
