Drawing on historic newspaper accounts, books and newsletters of the Canadian/U.S. Proportional Representation League, and on recent secondary references, historian Tom Monto has pulled together an overview of the use of proportional representation in Canada. This chronological history describes the drive for PR starting in the 1880s and its eventual success when by 1923, Single Transferable Voting had been adopted in 19 cities and two provincial governments, and would be used in 17 provincial elections and 150 city elections in Canada. The last Canadian STV government election happened in Calgary in 1971. Now again many favour electoral reform. Self-published by Tom Monto, of Edmonton. And all these layers exist together - sightings of deer in the ravine, the fight for the right to have chickens, children playing in the ravine, the family ramble through Mill Creek ravine - and are still a part of our day-to-day lives, as they have been for generations.…

Trade Paperback. Condizione: New. Rice Sheppard, Harry Ainlay and Margaret Crang fought for the working people of Edmonton, Alberta through the dark days of the World Wars, the fragile prosperity of the 1920s and the grinding poverty of the Dirty 30s and Cold War repression. Sheppard helped found the United Farmers of Alberta which governed Alberta for 14 years. During the Depression he switched his allegiance to Aberhart's Social Credit movement. Harry Ainlay, active in the CCF and the Alberta Teachers' Association, served as mayor for four years. Margaret Crang played a leading role in the League against War and Fascism and attempted to form a United Front of Edmonton's Left. She pursued legal redress for immigrants and political and religious dissidents under wartime "security" prohibitions. Her act of defiance on behalf of the Republican government in the Spanish Civil War caused outrage across Canada.
