1p., 4to. In good condition, on aged paper, laid down on a grey-paper mount. The letter is addressed 'Gentlemen'. In the first paragraph he explains that having received their letter, he sent 'Dr Clarkes Plates [.] to the Writing Engravers but have not as yet received them back'. He has sent the bearer of the present letter to find out when they will be done, and he has been told to tell them the answer he receives. The second paragraph reveals that the bearer of the letter is himself an engraver: 'I understand that he applied to you for the engraving of one of your Portrait Plates. I know he is desirous of having an opportunity of exerting his abilities in the finishing of a Plate & shouldyou be inclined to give him a trial I hope no motive relative to me will prevent it'.

Contemporary blue straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with wide decorative neo-classical border made up from fillets, a drawer-handle roll and a swag and stylized flower head roll, spine in seven compartments with double raised bands, the bands highlighted by rules and roll tools, lettered in the second compartment, the seventh compartment with onlaid label tooled in gilt with two armorial crests (one of the Peters family, the other unidentified), the remaining compartments with repeat decoration of a centrally-placed tool of two birds perched on a bow with crossed arrows behind them, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges with alternate bands of gilding A deluxe edition of Thomson's famed poem, with stipple-engravings from two of the greatest engravers of their time, and in a magnificent contemporary binding. Thomson's paean to the countryside and the simple country life is now seen as a precursor of the romantic movement in English poetry, as exemplified by Wordsworth and Coleridge. The present edition, published the year before the appearance of the Lyrical Ballads, is perhaps the most luxurious edition of The Seasons ever published. Condizione: Near Fine or Fine. First Edition. Utterly charming tale told in seven pictures of a little girl mothering a doll. Oblong 8vo. 21 by 28.5 cm. Takes us through the day the doll is received as the princess play-acts as the mother or caregiver to the doll. Engraved title, followed by seven engraved plates. Each of the plates has a decorative surround. The title is bounded by a floral garland, and the following plates are framed with several bands, each with its own distinctive repeat. Tomkins was the Historical Engraver to Her Majesty, so stated on the title page. Original wraps with a moderate amount of staining, and a tear in the center of the rear wrap. Some light soiling of the leaves within, but these are overall quite clean and crisp. Modern clamshell box has a small amount of rubbing along the edges, but this is a worthy complement to the book and very handsome indeed. Wraps. Cloth spine. Custom quarter morocco clamshell box.

Folio 16x13 inches. 4 volumes bound in two, handsomely leather bound in full straight grain morocco, gilt in compartments, boards gilt and blind embossed with a very handsome gilt roll tool of scallop shells and flowers. Text, 13 plans and 291 steel engraved plates on 126 leaves. Complete. Frontispiece in volume three creased, otherwise a lovely and extraordinarily clean copy of this gallery book. A few marks to the boards bit a very clean fresh copy.
