Elemento fondamentale della fortificazione normanna, la Torre Pisana, oggi patrimonio dell'UNESCO, edificata da Ruggero II, fu la struttura militare di controllo e dominio della "cittadella" e la sua domus. La tipologia militare, ancora leggibile malgrado le trasformazioni subite, per volere di re e viceré, convive con i caratteri distributivi riferibili all'architettura palaziale aulica nordafricana.Si è cercato di riconfigurare, attraverso le esigue tracce rimaste, dal punto di vista architettonico e militare, il donjon di Ruggero II, fondamentale elemento difensivo appartenente alla prima metà del secolo XII, argomento questo che costituisce anche il pretesto per molteplici ambiti di ricerca ancora oggi inesplorati.L'esame delle tracce, ancor oggi leggibili dell'antica organizzazione interna della torre e i documenti disponibili hanno permesso da un lato di datare le varie parti dell'edificio e di avanzare nuove proposte sull'uso originario degli ambienti e dall'altro di ridisegnare l'originaria conformazione volumetrica.
