32 pp. Deutsch.

Chuck Bowen, in Slant Magazine, however, did not agree with most of his colleagues, concluding his review with: 'Maybe Battle Royale's ultimate punchline is its inexplicable ability to fool some people into taking it seriously.' . This essay, however, does not review the film or pass moral judgment on its characters, but rather goes against the above cited Bowen and take Battle Royale seriously, regarding one of its psychological issues: the dehumanization of the other.

This ambiguity starts with the term 'education', for, in order to speak about an expansion of it in China one has to be aware of the fact that there are different forms of education and that these forms incorporate different prerequisites, applications, and goals. In Qing China, where 'imperial Confucianism' was established as the 'absolute criterion for thought and conduct' , Confucian ideals were forced upon the people via different media, ranging from oral transmission for the illiterate to primers for boys attending elementary school to the canonized 'Four Books and Five Classics' for civil service examination candidates. There could be no distinct 'general education' in our modern sense for all Chinese strata. Thus, the Chinese government had to employ different strategies among the range of social strata in order to achieve a dissemination of Confucian ideals with the ultimate goal of social stability. This essay discusses the different approaches to this task and the ways in which the ideals of the ruling elite were reflected in the reality of the people.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Chinese / China, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Sinologisches Seminar), course: Beginnings of Chinese Historiography, language: English, abstract: What we know today of Sima Qian's (145 -90 BCE) life and especially of the way he saw himself is drawn mainly from two sources of Chinese historiography - the Records of the Grand Historian or Shiji, written by himself and his father Sima Tan (164 - 110 BCE), and the History of the Former Han or Han Shu, written by Ban Gu (32 - 92 CE) . Chapter 130 of the former, i.e. the author's postface, provides us with an autobiography of Sima Qian, whereas Ban Gu offers a biography of him in the Han Shu that is mostly copied from the Shiji's postface. Additionally, after the biography Ban Gu added a letter to Ren An, a friend of Sima Qian's, which was written as a response to Ren An's own letter to the Grand Historian. The two mentioned accounts of Sima Qian's life and his self-conception differ strongly from each other. Whereas his postface serves as a biography both for his father Sima Tan as well as his reasons for writing, or rather completing, the Shiji, his letter offers a great deal of insight into his situation at court and the way he perceived it.The purpose of this paper is to give some insight into Sima Qian's self-conception and especially into his ways of legitimising his life and work. Thus, I will argue that the reason for his Confucian agenda of self-legitimation can be found in his self-conception displayed in his letter to Ren An.

Søren Clausen discussed the term in regard to China in his paper, Early Modern China - A Preliminary Postmortem. For Clausen, the search for a terminology describing an 'early modern China' emerged from the urge to incorporate China into a world history, whose importance he stresses in his introductory sentence: 'A world that is increasingly becoming 'one world' needs a world history' . What he also did was to recap the influence other historians had on the discussion during the 1980s and 90s, which are partially also addressed in the paper.

The aim of this study is therefore not to try and add more details to his story, but to introduce Wu Changshuo specifically as a painter - though his painting was least appreciated by himself - and to show that underneath the quite modern style typical of the Shanghai School there was still an orthodox painter, clinging to literati ideals of long gone dynasties. I will also show thatthe actual Wu Changshuo - the painter and the person - can be seen in his landscapes rather than in his multitudinous paintings of flowers and fruits.

His influence on and appreciation inlater times as well as his position among his contemporaries have been discussed on variousoccasions and should not be my main topic. My focus is on Ni Zan himself.Following the fall of the Song Dynasty to the Mongols under Kublai Khan in 1271, the YuanDynasty was established. That year marked the beginning of a period of turmoil and suppressionall over China, but especially for the Chinese intelligentsia and the Yuan dynasty, althoughcomparatively short, caused massive changes in cultural creativity, bringing forth painting stylesthat would persist and be quoted in the art scene of all later centuries.Taking a look at Ni Zan's paintings one cannot but notice certain elements that keep on appearingthroughout all of his oevre. Once he settled on a certain compositional type he kept repeating it. Atcloser inspection one can see his painting style slightly changing, although keeping to some fixedelements. This change in Ni's work is subtle, but noticeable and also readable. The readability of hislandscapes is the basis for this paper and will become clearer when going through Ni Zan's life, along with the events surrounding his time and simultaneously reading his paintings as the Chineseterm du hua (to read painting) suggests. That way I will show how Ni Zan's paintings can be seen asa journal and thereby now provide us with room for interpretation and insight into his life.I should note that the main inspiration for this paper came from Maxwell K. Hearn, a curator at theMetropolitan Museum of Art, and I therefore quote the term he used for this phenomenon by titlingthis paper The Pictorial Diary.
