Leather Bound. Condizione: Very Good Plus. Presumed First Edition Thus. London: Printed by W. Tooke, for J. Wilkie, in St. Paul's-Church-Yard, 1769. Second volume (of two) only. Presumed first edition of this uncredited "translation" (see comments below). 12mo., [4] + 270 pp. Three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Small-scale scuffing to leather at spine ends and edges, light wear otherwise. Early owner's bookplate at front pastedown; the number "26" is inked in the corner on the verso of the ffep. Overall, notably better than very good. Uncommon version, finely bound, of the biblical story of Othniel and Achsah. An ostensible translation by William Tooke from the original Chaldee (the semitic language of Chaldea, an ancient region of Babylon), but it is believed Tooke actually authored the work himself, as his exposition of the philosophy and religion of that area. Some original characters and text occur, but the text is of course in English (1769 English). Highly biblical tone, with correlative aphorisms liberally seasoning the plot action. For the bookplate collector, the one decorating the front pastedown (see scan) is that of Reuben Jeffery - possibly the grandfather of Reuben Jeffery III, the Under-Secretary of State for George W. Bush, but there is no provenance here to that effect. Just volume two here, but its stature as an enchanting piece of the binder's art, a serious vintage shelf display, is its highest collector value. Please see scans. l49n.

Condizione: Good. Complete three volume set. Full title - THE LIFE OF CATHARINE II. EMPRESS OF RUSSIA. WITH SEVEN PORTRAITS ELEGANTLY ENGRAVED, AND A CORRECT MAP OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE. IN THREE VOLUMES. . . THE THIRD EDITION, WITH CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENTS. VOL. I, II, and III. Each hardcover, H 20.75cm x L 13.25cm, uniformly bound in contemporary half-leather (leather spines and marbled paper boards with leather corners); spines decorated with six compartments - four gilt tooled plus gilt lettered "Life of Catharine II" title and Vol.# compartments; surface furrows and a few nicks to spines; Vol. I has pronounced scuff/ding at its volume label's right edge; original owner's personal age-toned and chipped paper labels affixed at spine heels. Boards rubbed with slender wear at edges; fractional singeing evident at tops of Vol. I and II boards with Vol. III front board bearing brunt at top 1cm. All text block edges marbled. Marbled endpapers (marbling pattern to boards, edges, and endpapers all match). Old ink stamps of two past owners "S.B. Mathews" and "Luther Fuller" on blank frontispiece rectos of Vol. I and II and at top right of Vol. III's title page. Mostly light to mild foxing/toning to interior leaves with a few moisture stains at margins. Bindings are quite firm. No bindery marks present but bindings are deftly executed and quite likely the work of an early 1800s London shop. Seven portraits specified in titles apparently allude to the seven images split among the respective Volume I and II frontispieces as no other portrait plates are present. *** VOL. I. Collates: [fp], [ffep], [ffly], [frontis], i-viii, 1-572, [rfly], [rfep], [rp]. unpaged b/w frontispiece features dual portraits of Peter III and Catharine II; strong band of toning to pages 478-479 caused by now removed paper bookmark with diminishing impressions upon preceding and successive pages; Tables I-III on pages 59-61; Appendix section pages 525-572. *** VOL. II. Collates: [fp], [ffep], [stub of mostly removed ffly], [frontis], i-viii, 1-543/blank, [rfly], [rfep], [rp]. Unpaged b/w frontispiece features five b/w portrait images; Appendix section pages 489-543. *** VOL. III. Collates: [fp], [ffep], i-viii, [foldout b/w map], 1-501, [publisher ad], [rfly], [rfep], [rp]. Unpaged map well foxed with its fore-edge slightly worn and curled as it extends past text-block; pages 419-420 double creased at lower fore-edge corner; musical score on page 440; Appendix section pages 441-501. *** Neither author nor translator is provided upon the volumes' respective title pages but the set was authored by Jean-Henri Castera under the title HISTOIRE DE CATHERINE II, IMPERATRICE DE RUSSIE and translated from the original French to English by William Tooke. As for genealogical sleuthing regarding Mathews and Fuller, the set was acquired from a Birmingham, Alabama estate but from a family whose eighteenth to mid-twentieth century roots, as evidenced by inscriptions and the like among other books in the large collection, were in New England and, in particular, within Maine. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 5.25 pounds (2.38 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
