Fille du grand peintre symboliste Jan Toorop, elle est également la mère d'Edgar Fernhout qui, de peintre figuratif deviendra, après guerre, l'un des principaux représentants de la nouvelle abstraction en Hollande. Cette situation de Charley Toorop, à la croisée des chemins de la modernité, sera illustrée dans l'exposition par des oeuvres de ces différents artistes auxquelles elle fut liée.
