Konkret greift der Autor vier Burgen, nämlich Neuburg, Falkenstein, Hartmannsberg und Hernstein, die im Besitz der Grafen von Falkenstein waren, heraus und versucht, die um diese Burgen akkumulierten Herrschaften als Burgherrschaft (châtellenie) zu begreifen. Dabei wird die innere Struktur jeder Burgherrschaft aufgezeigt.Die Hauptquelle, auf die sich der Autor bei seiner Analyse stützt, ist der 'Codex Falkensteinensis', der im Sommer 1166 im Kloster Herrenchiemsee in Oberbayern entstand.Dieses Thema führt zu der wichtigen Erkenntnis, dass die Burgherrschaft auf der Entwicklungslinie von der Villikationsverfassung über die Burgherrschaft zur landesherrlichen Amtsverfassung steht.
