Aggiungi al carrello400 pages. Hardcover: H 27.5cm x L 20.25cm. Dark blue cloth with stamped decoration; boards rubbed; some spots of light discoloration to rear board; mild scuffing and fraying at spine ends. Mild soiling upon edges; foxing upon front flyleaf but interior pages are clean and free of student inscriptions or signatures. Light gray e…ndpapers; b/w photographs and illustrations throughout; advertising section at rear. Future high-achievers pictured among the student photos are Baton Rouge, Louisiana architect A. Hays Town, Tulane architecture professor Bernard Lemann, and New Orleans historian Charles Dufour. Eight full page b/w photos (pages 11-18) demonstrate the soft focus technique often utilized by C. Bennette Moore and Eugene Delcroix but all are unattributed. Sophomore Maurice P. Sullivan is credited as the yearbook's "Staff Artist" (page 317) but a majority of drawings are signed "WS" and clearly demonstrate the distinctive style of William Spratling (1900-1967) whose delight in drawing Vieux Carre streetscapes coincides with the yearbook's decorative theme of the French Quarter. Why a faculty member would contribute a plethora of material to a student publication may be explained by Spratling's youth - merely 25 he was far more a contemporary of his students than a grizzled pedagogue - and, as noted on the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity roll (pg 223), Sullivan shared membership with "Fratres in Facultate" professor Spratling. "WS" drawings, several of which are color tinted, appear on pages 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 41, 43, 115, 141, 161, 183, 193, 215, 309, 349, and 400. A Spratling-drawn decorative border embellishes nearly every page as well. Eight Sullivan portraits/caricatures of Tulane faculty members with humorous captions (pgs 379-386) further hint at Spratling's artistic input for they are quite imitative of the Spratling and William Faulkner collaboration SHERWOOD ANDERSON AND OTHER FAMOUS CREOLES which too was published in 1926. In addition to the PIKE fraternity page, Spratling is present in a faculty photograph on page 30 and is mentioned as "Instructor in Architecture" on page 39. After a perusal of references (excluding, however, the Tulane archives), there are no citations regarding Spratling's contribution to this Tulane yearbook and thus this "lost" collection of Spratling's artistic endeavors is now rediscovered. Prior to the 1940s Tulane's enrollment was not particularly large and thus early annuals had a limited distribution and are now uncommon. A very good copy. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover in original binding and dust jacket. SIGNED and briefly inscribed by A. Hays Town on seond title page. A First Printing of 5000 The dust jacked inner flaps state: "A. Hays Town has designed more than 1000 buildings including schools, churches, commercial buildings, courthouses, banks, offices and residences during his…career. .during the thirties, Town was appointed director of the American Historical Building Survey for the state of Mississippi. He commented that the measuring and recording of the historical buildings aided him greatly in his future application of design. Moving back to Louisiana in 1939, after receiving national and international fame for his work., Town started his own architectural firm in Baton Rouge. He continued to have a varied practice encompassing mostly commercial and public buildings.Eventually he designed a home for a friend and liked it so well that he began to concentrate on residential design, which seemed 'a more satisfactory outlet' for his talents. Town has received many honors and rewards during his career, including the Natchez Preservation Award.and the Arthur Ross Award from the National Academy of Design in New York. His works have been published in Life, The New Yorker, Southern Living, Southern Accents, and most major architectural magazines in America and Europe. This book, which represents volume one, is a collection of 106 preliminary sketches of some of the buildings designed by Mr. Town since the '60. On the page opposite the sketch, the name of the person who commissioned the house will be listed along with the location and date designed." "Book Design by A. Hays Town The front cover shows The A, Hays Town House Baton Rouge, Louisiana 1951".
