Inscribed to Anne Kaiser of the Maryland House of Delegates by the author on the page facing the title page. Also laid in is a typed letter signed by Jerold J. Samet presenting this book to Delegate Kaiser inscribed by Ms. Townsend to her. Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend (born July 4, 1951) is an American attorney who was the sixth Lieutenant Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003. She ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Maryland in 2002. In 2010 Townsend became the chair of the non-profit American Bridge, an organization whose focus is to raise funds for Democratic candidates and causes. She is a member of the Kennedy family. Since leaving office, Townsend has written the book, Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches Are Mixing God with Politics and Losing Their Way. Townsend also contributes to The Recovering Politician website started by Jonathan Miller. She is an adjunct professor at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, a visiting fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and senior Nitze fellow at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Part memoir with inspirational insight, part religious and political rebuke of American Christianity, 'Failing America's Faithful' is a heartfelt call for spiritual renewal from Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a member of America's most famous and controversial Catholic family. Derived from a Kirkus Review: "Instead of emphasizing the fact that we are all children of God, faith in America now divides communities." So charges Townsend, who offers a faith-based platform for liberals. The right gets religion wrong, and the left doesn't get it at all, theologian Jim Wallis has observed. Townsend is a committed Catholic who despairs of the Church's political leanings and who counters with an ethic of service to the poor and powerless. In a brief analysis, she contrasts the liberal and conservative views of human nature. There is an appropriate role for religion and the religious in politics, Townsend argues, one that reconciles the vision of the Founding Fathers with values born of faith. The public is ready for just such a hybrid, even as clergy and politicians have insisted that it's a war of each against all, undermining "the sense of national unity and collective responsibility that has mattered so much throughout American history.".
