Hard cover, Demy 8vo (7 x 8 3/4 inches), in blue cloth extra decorated with riding scene with three figures blocked in gilt with titles to front board within banners and illustrator's name lower right. Spine decorated with fox, horn and ribbon among… illustrated title. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed, with glazed black end papers, xxiv, [2],87 pp. plus [1] publisher's colophon. Tissue-guarded frontis plus eight unnumbered full page plates from the Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson, from his pen and ink drawings, as well as numerous vignettes, headers and other elements within the text. Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co., London and Edinburgh.**CONDITION: Very Good Plus, or better. A few light marks to top board (seen only in the right light.) Minor Foxing to front prelims only, a few spots to title page and seen on fore-edge. Mostly affects the tissue guard. Otherwise, internally very clean, no writing and lightly toned. No d/j. Now in mylar. British AUTHOR William Somervile, Esq. (1675-1742) (also spelled Somerville,) penned this georgic poem, as if addressing a royal audience, about the manners of fox hunting in the early 18th century. R. Sharp's brief biography outlines the Author's upbringing. The publisher George William Redway(1859-1934) would later join in partnership with Kegan Paul in 1889. A "Cranford style" gift book.
