Aggiungi al carrelloLeather Bound. pp. xxiv, 381; pp. xiv, 427. 8vo. Bound in full brown leather with gilt rules, lettering and decoration to spine, faint marbled foredges. Extremities lightly rubbed, some edgewear, superficial surface cracks to the spine of Vol. 2; ink name and date to corner of front free endpapers, contents remain clean and unmarked with tight, sound bindings. Overall, very good. Originally published in French as 'De l'esprit des loix' in 1748 it was immediately subject to censorship both by the French authorities as well the Catholic Church where it was added to the Vatican's "Index Librorum Prohibitorum" or List of Prohibited Books. Stained armorial bookplates for Henry Maxwell Esquire, M.P. Burlamaqui was "Councellor of State, and late Professor of Natural and Civil Law at Geneva." This English translation became a standard textbook at Cambridge and many American colleges, including Princeton, Harvard, and the University of Pennsylvania. The first scholarly work on Burlamaqui was written by an American, M. Ray Forrest Harvey, who in 1937 argued that Burlamaqui was well known to America's Founding Fathers and that his writings exerted considerable influence on the American constitutional system. Burlamaqui taught and wrote in the vernacular, not in the traditional university Latin, thereby making natural jurisprudence more accessible and a part of civic education. Bookplate is for Henry Maxwell, 7th Baron Farnham (1799 1868), Irish peer and Member of Parliament; family motto is Je Suis Pret. Vol. I states Fourth Edition, revised and corrected.…
