"Islam and the Divine Comedy, is an abridged translation of La Escatologia Musulmana en la Divina Comedia, originally published in Spanish in Madrid in 1919. The author, Prof. Miguel Asin Y. Palacios, though a Catholic priest, was attracted by the Muslim philosophers and Sufis of Spain, particularly Ibn Massara, Ibn Hazm, Ibn Rushd and the great Sufi Ibn al-Arabi. He wrote several books on Hispano-Islamic philosophy and Sufism, but the international renown he earned was on account of this book. After years of extensive research, he discovered parallels between the Islamic lore about the after life based on Hadith and The Divine Comedy by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), a work for which he is justly famed. The Similarities, far from being superficial, pervade the entire poem. Prof. Asin concluded that Dante had derived most of the features of and episodes about the hereafter from (i) the Hadith literature relating to the Prophet Muhammad and his ascension (mi'raj') and (ii) to the spiritual visions of Ibn al-Arabi. In his opinion, The Divine Comedy was not an entirely original work, as Dante had before him a ready made pattern based on Islamic writings on the after-life. With the publication of this work, Prof. Asin found himself in the eye of a storm, as nationalist Italians, the Roman Catholic Clergy, and other European Christians could not reconcile themselves to the thought of their most cherished religious poem being based on non-Christian sources. Prof. Asin, however, faced up to his critics by enumerating the possible sources from which Dante could have obtained the salient features of Islamic eschatology. Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Part of The Chandos Classics edited by J. A. Atkinson. You can see the covers in the photos. They look pretty clean. There is a chip/loss off the top edge of the spine. A bit of the blue is also lost off the bottom edge of the spine. And there's a chip/loss at the top corner of the rear cover. The two bottom cover edges each have a few little spots on them. The top and middle cover edges look very good. All four corners have spots of rub-through. The label on the spine is toned and darkened. The lettering, however, is quite legible. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. Both covers are nicely, tightly bound. There's a small sliver of paper loss at the edge of the front inside cover just adjacent to its juncture with the facing front end paper. There is also one tiny tear off the bottom edge of this front end paper. The end papers are black. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found any instances of soiling. However, note that I cannot see all the pages because many of them are uncut (at the top edge). So any potential buyer should be skilled in the art of cutting pages. A few of the early pages, including the half-title page, have one or a few small tears off their top edge, not reaching any of the print. I also found one page in the text that has a loss off the top edge (not reaching the print). Some of the earlier pages also have a little crinkling off their top edges, and three of them have a slightly rough middle edge. I didn't see any significant creasing, that is no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. There is a lightly penned name and date (29/98)on the half-title page. There is no other writing to be found anywhere.
