Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 313 pages. Published in 1989. The author's masterpiece. One of the greatest mystery/thriller novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other… subsequent editions, of which there are, confusingly, too many. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Seicho Matsumoto's "Suna no Utsuwa" in its definitive English translation by Beth Cary. The literal translation of the original Japanese title is "Vessel of Sand". It is impossible not to be enthusiastic or even rapturous about Seicho Matsumoto. He was a ground-breaking novelist in the often disparaged mystery-thriller genre. "Genre" is a bad word in literature. It means someone who cranks them out predictably and insensibly, and indeed Matsumoto himself was quite prolific. But he was also the consummate Master Writer: A "genre" novelist who writes about his beloved subjects with brilliance and tenderness - or what we prefer to describe as "empathy" . As such, "Inspector Imanishi Investigates" is one of a handful of thrillers which will also make you cry, without its being melodramatic at all. His single greatest novel is, indisputably, "Tokyo Express", which can only be described with one word: Perfect. "Inspector Imanishi Investigates" ranks as its close second greatest. An absolute "must-have" title for Seicho Matsumoto collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American/Soho Press) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws (because they were avidly read), are in multiple subsequent printings, are various Softcover Editions, or are "New Release" Editions altogether. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy.
