Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Author: Euripides; translated by Robert Potter Publisher: Printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall Place: London Publication dates: 1781 and 1783 Edition: First edition of Potter's translation Binding: Full leather Condition: Fair Format: Two volumes, quarto Full Description London: Printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall, 1781 and 1783. First edition of Robert Potter's English translation of The Tragedies of Euripides, complete in two volumes. Although commonly catalogued under the date 1781, Volume I was published in 1781 and Volume II followed in 1783. The first volume includes Potter's dedicatory address to the Dowager Duchess of Beaufort. Bound in contemporary full calf with raised spine bands, gilt ornamental compartments and gilt borders. Both volumes retain their red morocco title labels, lettered "Euripides by Potter" in gilt. The volume-number label is missing from the spine of Volume I. The title label of Volume II has a substantial area of loss, although most of the lettering remains legible. Volume II retains its black morocco volume label. The bindings display considerable age-related rubbing, scuffing and surface wear, with wear to the corners, joints, raised bands and spine extremities. The front board of Volume I is detached but present. There is also some loss and deterioration to the leather around the joints and spine ends. Despite the wear, the gilt decoration remains attractive and the two volumes display well together. A pencil ownership note and bookplate apparently associate the volumes with Henry Joseph Thomas Drury (1778-1841), the noted classical scholar, bibliophile and Harrow schoolmaster who taught Lord Byron and remained his friend and correspondent. Drury was also an early member of the Roxburghe Club and assembled an important library of classical works and manuscripts. As the attribution has not been independently authenticated, the provenance is described as probable rather than definitive. Internally, the pages show general age toning and discolouration, with scattered foxing throughout. A pencil note appears to the front matter. The text remains clear and readable. An uncommon first edition of Potter's influential translation of Euripides, enhanced by its attractive eighteenth-century gilt binding and probable association with Henry Drury. A desirable set for a collector of classical literature, eighteenth-century translations, Lord Byron associations or historic private libraries. Condition Summary Fair. Complete two-volume set. Volume-number label missing from Volume I. Substantial tear and loss to the title label of Volume II. General rubbing, scuffing and leather wear to both bindings, particularly at the joints, corners and spine ends. Some page discolouration and scattered foxing. Pencil note and ownership bookplate to the preliminary leaves. Please refer to photographs for the binding condition.…
