Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (£19.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 252pp. The wartime memo…ir of Lyudmila Pavlichenko (1916-74), is a remarkable document. Pavlichenko was World War II's best scoring sniper and had a varied wartime career that included trips to England and America. In June 1941, when Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa, she left her university studies, ignored the offer of a position as a nurse, to become one of Soviet Russia's 2000 female snipers. Less than a year later she had 309 recorded kills, including 29 enemy sniper kills. She was withdrawn from active duty after being injured. She was also regarded as a key heroic figure for the war effort. She spoke at rallies in Canada and the US and the folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote a song, 'Killed By A Gun' about her exploits. Her US trip included a tour of the White House with FDR. In November 1942 she visited Coventry and accepted donations of £4516 from Coventry workers to pay for three X ray units for the Red Army. She also visited a Birmingham factory as part of her fundraising tour. She never returned to combat but trained other snipers. After the war, she finished her education at Kiev University and began a career as a historian. She died in 1974 aged 58, and was buried in Moscow's Novodevichye Cemetery. Quite a scarce book. Jacket by Jem Butcher (illustratore).

David Pinsky was a Yiddish language writer, best known as a playwright. At a time when Eastern Europe was only beginning to experience the industrial revolution, Pinski was the first to introduce to its stage a… drama about urban Jewish workers; a dramatist of ideas, he was notable also for writing about human sexuality with a frankness previously unknown to Yiddish literature. He was also notable among early Yiddish playwrights in having stronger connections to German language literary traditions than Russian. He was raised in Vitebsk. At first destined for a career as a rabbi, he had achieved an advanced level in Talmudic studies by the age of 10. At 19 he left home, intending to study medicine in Vienna, Austria, but a visit to I.L. Peretz in Warsaw (then also under Russian control) convinced him to pursue a literary career instead. He briefly began studies in Vienna (where he also wrote his first significant short story, "Der Groisser Menshenfreint" ="The Great Philanthropist"), but soon returned to Warsaw, where he established a strong reputation as a writer and as an advocate of Labor Zionism, before moving to Berlin, Germany in 1896 and to New York City in 1899. In 1949 he immigrated to Israel. His naturalistic tragedy Isaac Sheftel tells of a technically creative weaver, whose employer scorns him, but exploits his inventions. He finally smashes the machines he has created, and falls into drunken self-destruction. Like many of Pinski's central characters, he is something other than a traditional hero or even a traditional tragic hero.
