ABOUT THIS TITLE AND BOOK:"The Decameron" is a classic work of Italian literature, written by Giovanni Boccaccio in the 14th century. The title is derived from the Greek words "deka" (ten) and "mera" (day), reflecting the book's structure of 100 tales told by ten young women and men over ten days. The work is renowned for its comprehensive portrayal of life during the Black Death, as the storytellers have retreated to the countryside to escape the plague ravaging Florence. Boccaccio's tales range from the erotic to the tragic, the pious to the mundane, and are considered a masterpiece of classical early Italian prose. The translator, John Payne (1842 1916), was a poet and translator, known for his translations of Boccaccio and other significant works from French and Italian literature. Louis Chalon, the illustrator, was a French artist known for his book illustrations and paintings. The style and quality of his illustrations could add to the book's collectibility and aesthetic value. Happy to send pictures and answer a questions.

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. First Edition; First Printing. 32 pages, bound in blue laid-paper wraps, with dedicatory inscription on front cover: D. B. Macdonald Esq with the translator's greeting" Duncan Black Macdonald was one of the first scholars of Arabic literature in the United states. World Cat has very little information on this title, especially as there is a paucity of publication information within the book itself, with only the date (MDCCCX) on the front cover, the title page only bearing the title, and the translator's preface being unsigned. This copy is in fair condition, with indications that it has at sometime been folded in half to fit into someone's pocket, leading to the loss of half of the back cover of the volume. The only word cvisible on the reac cover is ".olland," which matches the information on a similar title in the John Payne Collection in the University of Birmingham archives, with the same date and this note, presumably on the part of the rear cover now missing: "/1-25: Printed in Holland. 25 copies. /26-30: 5 unbound copies, on fine paper, in fascicules. " In 1921, the John Payne Society reprinted this title, edited by Thomas Wright. Other than the creasing and loss to the portion of the rear cover, there is a subsequent owner's name and address on the title page, and a penicil notes about Ibn Et tefrid from a book by Wright in yet another hand. Page edges are toned and show some chipping, though not affecting the text ; though this volume has been the object of study by several readers, there are no notes within the text. A very scarce title. Poetry- Collectible; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 32 pages; Signed by Translator.
