Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: very good. First Edition thus. 16 pp of text (pp 7 to 23) followed by 40 brightly colored plates (13 by 9 inches, or 31 by 23 cm) on hard card stock showing traditional dress of the various regions of France. Each plate is accompanied with a separate sheet of light paper with a caption. As an extra bonus a prior owner pasted (lightly) eight cards with hand-colored images of women in French peasant dress. These cards are 9 by 13 cm. The print technology used for the plates coming with the book was photo lithography. The text comes with a still useful bibliography of costume books. This copy is disbound but otherwise the plates are all in fine condition. Minor wear, creases and like to some of the caption sheets. DJ with minor corner chips and now protected with mylar. As to the cards, they have some minor soilage (light fingerprint, dust, etc.). One has a small corner chip. Presumably they came in two envelopes which are also pasted to the rear endpaper.
1st British 4to, cloth. 167 pp, 150 illustrations (16 tipped-in color), bibliography. Some wear, in an acetate dj with losses.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good dj. 1st English-language edition. [minimal wear to book, itty-bitty stain near bottom of front cover, light age-toning to edges of text block, custom bookplate of film director Mark Sandrich on front pastedown (see 2nd scanned image); the jacket is age-toned (more so on the spine, with small tears at a couple of spine corners), with some staining to the rear panel and a bit of wear along the top edge]. (B&W art reproductions, tipped-on color plates) A nice-produced survey of the artist's life and work. Following a brief (21-page) introductory essay, the remainder of the 168-page book is comprised of full-page reproductions of T-L's paintings, every eighth one of which is in color; all are present, the color prints being tipped onto individual pages. The color prints are: "The Dog-Cart" (1880); "Countess A. de Toulouse-Lautrec" (1882); "Countess A. de Toulouse-Lautrec" (1887); "The Laundress" (1889) [held in place by yellowed tape at corners]; "Desire Dehan, Opera Bassoonist" (1891); "'La Goulu' at the 'Moulin Rouge'" (1891); "La Coulue" (1891); "At the 'Moulin Rouge': A Couple of Dancers" (1892); "Jane Avril, 'La Melinite'" (1892); "Miss May Belfort" (1895); "Madame Berthe Bady" (1897); "In Bed" (1892); "The Inmate of the Brothel" (1894); "Model Resting" (1896); "At the Circus: The Spanish Walk" (1899); "The Milliner, Mlle Margouin" (1900). The book concludes with three pages of quotes, "Lautrec Seen by His Contemporaries," followed by detailed descriptions of the plates and reproductions. The publisher's statement opposite the title page reads: "This volume edited by André Gloeckner, was first published in September MCMXXXIX by the Hypérion Press, Paris. Colour blocks by Demoulin, Paris; text and colour plates printed by G. Desgrandchamps, Paris; photogravure by Humblot, Nancy; binding by Joseph Taupin, Paris." Mark Sandrich (1900-1945), whose bookplate depicts a motion picture camera of the era, began directing short films in 1926 and ultimately became the director most notably associated with the renowned Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers musicals, having directed five of the team's nine starring vehicles (among them TOP HAT and SHALL WE DANCE). ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy oversize book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.
