This edition "first published 1960", but the presence of the 9-digit "Standard Book Number" (not ISBN) 486-20620-3 to copyright page narrows down the date of this typesetting to 1967-1969. This book uses descriptive (as opposed to the newer, algebraic) notation of moves. Comments on games 1926-1946. We use the ISBN (with preliminary zero added) found to rear wrap. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+ dj. First American Edition. [a good solid, firmly-bound book, with only light shelfwear; the jacket is somewhat age-toned along the spine, with some modest edgewear here and there]. An epic of Russian historical fiction. Although pitched as a sequel to the author's earlier novel "And Quiet Flows the Don," published in the U.S. in 1934, and stated in the jacket blurb to be "an absolutely complete novel in itself," in fact it consists of the third and fourth parts of what was originally published in the USSR between 1928 and 1940, and is considered to be a single work in four volumes. (Knopf reissued the entire American edition in a two-volume edition in 1943; according to Wikipedia, the Garry translation lacks about 25 percent of the total work, but was "revised and completed" by Robert Daglish in 1950.) The narrative in this book picks up "immediately after the Revolution of 1917 and carries on to the end of the civil war in 1921, when peace was finally established. It follows the fortunes of a group of Cossacks and their women as now they fight with the Red and now with the Whites -- as they fluctuate between the intense individualism of their Cossack tradition and the socialism of the new society. . It shows the Cossacks in love and hate, in passion and despair, and at last in the surrender of exhaustion and the beginning of a new life." (I wonder how Jewish readers of the book might have felt about their "Cossack tradition"?) The work has been adapted several times for Russian cinema and TV, but these have been little seen outside their country of origin. It was also the basis for a 1935 opera by Ivan Dzerzhinsky, reportedly a favorite of Joseph Stalin. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.
