Davies's English translation and adaptation of Carlo Goldoni's 1750 Venetian comedy "Il Bugiardo" (The Liar), made from the Carlo Signorelli Italian edition and issued in Heinemann's "Kingswood Plays" series for school and amateur theatrical production. Davies's introduction, addressed "To the Boys and Girls Who Will Act in This Play," opens with Robert Browning's tribute verse and gives a plot summary along with a sketch of Goldoni's life (Venice, 1707 - Paris, 1793). The action is set in a corner of a square in eighteenth-century Venice, with the houses of Pantalone and Doctor Balanzoni on the right and the Eagle Inn on the left, and unfolds over a single day and evening as young Lelio, newly returned from Naples with his servant Arlecchino, spins a tangle of lies around his father's arranged marriage plans and his own secret betrothal. Characters are the standard commedia dell'arte line-up (Lelio, Arlecchino, Pantalone, Brighella, Columbina, Doctor Balanzoni) together with Rosaura, Beatrice, Florindo, Ottavio, and Cleonice Anselmi.
