Die Gretchenfrage der Literaturwissenschaft lautet bekanntlich: Ist Gattungstheorie ein systematischer oder ein historischer Gegenstand? Die Studie formuliert eine eindeutige Antwort. Selbst der Kern aller Gattungspoetik - die Lehre von der Trias "Lyrik, Epik, Dramatik" - ist historisch. Diese Theorie ist nämlich erst um 1795 entwickelt worden. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert gab es eine völlig andersartige und mit den Mitteln der klassischen Dialektik operierende Gattungstheorie. Sie wird in dieser Studie anhand der Poetik Scaligers dargestellt. Im 18. Jahrhundert setzt ein langwieriger Transformationsprozess ein. Die wichtigsten Beiträge stammen von J. Addison, J. J. Dubos, J. A. Schlegel, Mendelssohn und J. J. Engel. Am Ende der Aufklärung konnten Schiller und Humboldt in der Diskussion mit Goethe und den Brüdern Schlegel die Lehre von der Trias entwickeln.
