Per i primi storici dell'antichità l'unica condizione per scrivere… era quella di aver visto con i propri occhi le cose esposte; e poi aver vissuto quei fatti descritti, per offrire una ulteriore garanzia di autenticità al lettore, anche perché ogni narrazione è inevitabilmente soggettiva, ma la conoscenza diretta riduce di molto l'approssimazione e il pericolo manipolatorio. Un mondo, in gran parte estinto, che ritroviamo nella memoria di Mario, che ha sempre vissuto in Gavi e per Gavi, conoscendo la sua realtà pezzo per pezzo, casa per casa, abitante per abitante, nome per nome: una trama spazio-temporale di persone, facce, case, vie, piazze, palazzi, detti, aneddoti, modi di dire, soprannomi, feste, carnevali, leve, nella ruota dei vivi e dei morti, nell'intrico dei giorni che passano e della rimembranza che si sedimenta. Mario, inoltre, dal suo osservatorio della bottega di barbiere, ha continuato ad ascoltare (azione molto in disuso) e a scambiare mosaici e pezzetti di gaviesità, mettendo insieme i fatti, l'osservazione e il resoconto, proprio come uno storico di professione.
