Seine ersten Platten erschienen in den späten 1930er-Jahren, richtig bekannt wurde er aber erst nach seinem Militärdienst, als er 1946 für Capitol mehrere erfolgreiche Singles aufnahm und gleichzeitig kleine Filmrollen erhielt.
