Although freedom of worship was legally forbidden, compulsory adherence by the laity to the Established Church was generally enforced through moderate measures, even in such times of crisis as the Spanish dangers of the 1580's and 1590's. Rarely were harsher penalties enforced, and then only on a very few. For their part, the great majority of atholics while remaining steadfast in their religious beliefs, were otherwise obedient and loyal subjects." Pp.xii/290, owner's name to front free endpaper.
