Paperback. Condizione: New. An exemplar of Indian literature-the only and heart-rending biography of a daughter by her father In a moment of rare passion Govardhanram Madhavram Tripathi, author of Sarasvatichandra, exclaimed 'I only want their souls'. He was referring to the souls of his countrymen and women, which he sought to cultivate through his literary writings. Lilavati was his and Lalitagauri's eldest daughter. Her education and the writing of Sarasvaticandra were intertwined. She was raised to be the perfect embodiment of virtue, and died at the age of twenty-one, consumed by tuberculosis. In moments of 'lucidity', she spoke of her suffering and that challenged the very foundations of Govardhanram's life. In 1905 he wrote her biography, Lilavati Jivankala. This is a rare work in biographical literature, a father writing about the life of a deceased daughter. Despite Govardhanram's attempts to contain Lilavati as a unidimensional figure of his imagination, she goes beyond that, sometimes by questioning the fundamental tenets of Brahminical beliefs, and at others by being so utterly selfless as to be unreal even to him. Lilavati: A Life is a cross between literature in translation, social and political history, and women's studies. Tridip Suhrud's introduction dwells on the themes of the cultivation of selfhood, of nation and the ideal of sacrifice, which is sure to resonate with contemporary readership, especially women.

A night in Manoharpuri. 7. Forest, dark night and Sarasvatichandra. 8. Kumud sundari leaves suvarnapur. 9. Preparations for the morning. 10. An encounter with the outlaws. 11. Smouldering embers. An epic novel written in four parts from 1887 to 1901, Sarasvatichandra is both the enactment and embodiment of the life philosophy of one man, and his sole mission. Part II, Gunasundari s Household, details the complex dynamics of a Hindu joint family. Minister of Ratnanagari, Vidya Chatura and Gunasundari were married as children. Intelligent and eager, a young Gunasundari is educated by her husband to share his pleasures of literature, poetry, philosophy. But this blissful aesthetic conjugality is disrupted when his relatives come to live with them. She must suddenly manage a household of fourteen individuals, each with different needs and idiosyncracies. Govardhanram s acute, often delightfully wry observations on human nature, the household dynamics, his sharp characterisation and descriptions of a pregnant Gunasundari struggling to keep the family joint and content are perceptive and thought-provoking. The novel holds up a fascinating mirror to Gujarati society, the joint family, particularly the role of women, and life in the princely states against the backdrop of India, pre-Independence, in transition at the turn of the nineteenth century-culturally, politically and ideologically. Before Gandhi, arguably no other work has so profoundly influenced the ethos and imagination of Gujarat as Sarasvatichandra. Parts III and IV, also translated by Tridip Suhrud, an acknowledged scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Gujarat, are forthcoming.

It attempts to apply the historical method of criticism to the study of the Gujarati poet. There are evident reasons for shortcomings in such a treatment of this subject. But in spite of all difficulties, it may be predicted that future labourers in this field will not find their task hopeless. The longer poems usually end with a statement of the dates of their composition and short notices of their authors.

A novel of epic proportions written in four parts from 1887 to 1901, Sarasvatichandra is both the enactment and embodiment of the life philosophy of one man, and his sole mission. Part III, Ratnanagari s Statecraft, details the efforts of Maniraj, the enlightened ruler of the princely state of Ratnanagari, and his able minister, Vidya Chatura, to create a responsible and inclusive polity in times of decay and change. Although feudal, Ratnanagari has survived British expansion because of the strength and vision of its rulers. With rare courage and candour, Tripathi deliberates on the impact of British rule in the context of the 1857 Revolt, even as he conducts a philosophical enquiry into the nature of governance. We also travel with Sarasvatichandra rescued from death by ascetics in Part II to a remote monastery in the high mountains of Sundargiri, headed by the enigmatic and erudite Swami Vishnudas. The novel holds up a fascinating mirror to Gujarati society and life in the princely states against the backdrop of pre-independent India, in transition at the turn of the nineteenth century culturally, politically and ideologically. Before Gandhi, arguably no other work has so profoundly influenced the ethos and imagination of Gujarat as Sarasvatichandra. Part IV, also translated by Tridip Suhrud, an acknowledged scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Gujarat, is forthcoming. (jacket).

Night Life: The rising curtain and the ordeal by fire. 20. Leave taking. 21. Walking away. A novel of epic proportions, written in four parts from 1887 to 1901, Sarasvatichandra is both an enactment and the embodiment of the life philosophy of one man, and his sole mission. Part I, Buddhidhan s Administration, narrates the story of one individual s extraordinary rise from poverty to power, to become the Karbhari of Suvarnapur. East India Company s growing presence in the Indian native states provides the setting for the rivalry between Buddhidhan and the ruling Karbhari, Shathrai, and the royal intrigue involving Bhupsinh, claimant to the throne of Suvarnapur. The parallel story threading through all four parts is of an unusual and abiding love between Sarasvatichandra and Kumud who, betrothed young, fall in love before marriage-through an exchange of letters, words and worlds. Written sixty years before Independence, the novel holds up a fascinating mirror to Gujarati society of that time, the joint family, particularly the role of women, and life in the princely states, against the backdrop of a nation in transition at the turn of the century-culturally, politically and ideologically. Before the advent of Gandhi, arguably no other work has so profoundly influenced the ethos and imagination of Gujarat as Sarasvatichandra. Part II, III, and IV, also translated by Tridip Suhrud, an acknowledged scholar of nineteenth and twentieth century Gujarat are forthcoming.

A novel of epic proportions written in four parts from 1887 to 1901, Sarasvatichandra is both the enactment and the embodiment of the life philosophy of one man, and his sole mission. A witness to the intense upheaval that British India was undergoing at the turn of the nineteenth century, Govardhanram s objective in writing this novel was to educate his readers on key issues of his times and help them find their way out of the darkness into some kind of light . Part IV, The Dreamland, brings to a culmination the philosophical and narrative concerns explored in Parts I, II, III. At the heart of it lies the question of dharma and right conduct in the realms of state, society, family and love; and widow remarriage, a concern central to late nineteenth-century reform. It offers a utopia both personal and societal in the form of Kalyangram, where the ideal and desirable dominate over the real and possible. Sarasvatichandra and Kumud, separated in Part I, meet at last on Sundargiri and travel together in a dream. The novel holds up a fascinating mirror to Gujarati society, the role of women in polity and life in the native states against the backdrop of India, pre-Independence, in transition culturally, politically and ideologically. Before Gandhi, arguably no other work has so profoundly influenced the ethos and imagination of Gujarat as Sarasvatichandra. Tridip Suhrud, who has also translated Parts I, II and III, is an acknowledged scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Gujarat. (jacket).
