"The Wings Club is privileged to have as its Fourteenth "Sight" Lecturer Juan Terry Trippe, this country's pioneer of over-ocean flying and one who is recognized as the dean of airline executives around the world. The subject chosen for this year's Sight Lecture was the late Charles A. Lindbergh whose solo flight to Paris fifty years ago made such a significant worldwide impact on commercial aviation. We are thus especially fortunate in having Mr. Trippe as our lecturer since he knew and worked with Charles Lindbergh during virtually all of his adult life. Mr. Trippe served as a naval aviator in World War I. On returning to Yale, he organized the Yale University Flying Club. After graduation, he operated an air charter service on Long Island and then was one of the founders of Colonial Air Transport, serving as its managing Director from 1924 to 1926. In 1927, Mr. Trippe founded Pan American Airways and his entire working life then became dedicated to the development of international air transportation. When Pan American made its first flight October 19, 1927 on the 90 mile route between Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba, it had $300,000 in total assets. When Mr. Trippe retired as Chairman of the Board and President in 1968, Pan Am had assets exceeding a billion dollars and a route system of some 80,000 miles linking the United States with some 85 countries on six continents. Mr. Trippe continued as Chairman Emeritus until 1976 and is now an Honorary Director of Pan Am and still active in company affairs. In the early days, the famed survey flights by Charles Lindbergh were made at Mr. Trippe's instigation. They served as the foundation for Pan Am's Caribbean, Central and South American route system and then, later, the North Atlantic route. Lindbergh's survey flight north to the Orient was also made in connection with Pan Am's route development plans. Under Mr. Trippe's direction, Pan Am was the first airline to fly across the Pacific, the first with passenger service across the Atlantic, the first to order and operate American built jet transports and the first to order the wide bodied Boeing 747. In recognition of his contributions to aviation, tourism and trade, Mr. Trippe has been awarded 26 decorations by 19 foreign countries and was awarded by President Truman the Medal of Merit, the United States highest civilian award. Mr. Trippe is a founding member of The Wings Club and in 1942 was a member of the Club's first Board of Directors. He personally arranged some badly needed financial support without which the Club might not have survived its early days. The Wings Club is honored to have as its 1977 Sight Lecturer an outstanding pioneer of commercial aviation who from the earliest days of the fledging airline industry has seen it all happen and has, furthermore, played a major role in establishing our country's prredominant position in air transportation."
